ID on an ant please?

Post by P_T »

Here it is, the back seems to be covered with silver hair. Any idea?

PT,
Nice animal! What I can see makes me think of genus Polyrhachis. AFAIK, this genus, with around 100 species in AUS, is rather common down the hill there at your place. But don´t take this as an ID, only as an "idea" or guess, I am not familiar with your Ozzie ant fauna. For a secure ID mostly one has to have a closer look at the specimen with a magnifying glass or a microscope to recognize the decisive features.

I concur, this looks like one of the many Polyrhachis species. Nice shot.
