Ice Crystals

Post by CrispyBee »

I initially dismissed this frozen puddle, thinking it's too 'bubbly' and messy looking - but on closer inspection those "bubbles" were actually crystals - or more accurately multiple layers of crystals (some of them growing sideways) which are most likely the result of multiple cycles of freezing and thawing.

In the nearby woods there were a couple of interesting leaves and pinecones with pretty crystals:

Thank you!

It's actually a bit weird, these underlying layers look a bit "muddy" or even out of focus when their structures get too small on-screen. This would probably work a lot better as a big print :-k

Really nice! Photo #3 is best for me too.

I am always impressed by the variety of crystal shapes for ice. Huge differences "as a function of temperature and water vapour supersaturation relative to ice": Nakaya snow crystal morphology .

I notice that ResearchGate says that paper was "uploaded by Kenneth Libbrecht."

Kenneth Libbrecht is famous in the area of ice crystal formation. If you click on the link, you'll get access to a bunch more papers. If you search Amazon for his name, you'll find something like 10 different books.
