A wee weird spider

Post by MarkSturtevant »

I came home one day last summer, and there was a tiny spider dangling from my hat. I caught it in my hand and got a nice surprise! This is one of the weirder ant mimicking jumping spiders, Myrmarachne formicaria. It's the males that have the over-sized chelicerae. Besides their ant-like appearance, they also behave much like an ant. As they dart around erratically, they also wave their front legs in front to be like antennae. Extension tubes and a Raynox 250 greatly assisted in getting the necessary magnification.
