Alien fungus in a tray
I noticed this small fungus growing in an old seedling tray the other day. Does anybody know what it might be? Camera: Fujifilm XT-4
with Fujifilm 80mm macro. Single diffused flash 1/250 sec at f8. 75 stacked images using in-camera focus bracketing and Zerene Stacker. Post processed in ON1 RAW.- MarkSturtevant

I agree with Pau. It looks like a liverwort. The cups are called gemmae, and they are used in asexual cloning of the plant. Liverworts also have a sexual life cycle. The whole weird thing is explained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q82zgzWk3B4

Thanks. I think you are both right here. I have looked up liverworts and they look similar. Always good to find out what your subject is.

Liverworts are fascinating. The ones in my yard have displayed both sexual and asexual forms for the last couple of years. I had no idea what the sexual forms were, when they first appeared.

Nicely done picture of something that's NOT an insect.
