A frequent visitor during the last weeks of summer, this female ruby-throat, about the size of my thumb, nested and may have been born here; I found a nest on the ground that had been on a small branch, perhaps hers. She has been feeding avidly, storing energy for migration, perhaps all the way across the Gulf of Mexico. I haven't seen her for several days now. Lot of tropical storms this year; I hope she makes it.
Existing light; Nikon 850, 200-500mm Nikon at 500mm, f5.6, 1/2000 second, ISO 20,000

Thinking back to the days of 35mm film, those shutter speeds and ASA now ISO seem so unreal but today not so unusual. Wonderful photograph!

Re: Parting with a small friend
My thanks to you both.
You are quite right on the abilities of the recent crop of digital cameras, Ken. ISO 10 Kodachrome was a bit before my time, but struggling with ISO 64 combined with a slow lens is a vivid memory.
