Flies aren't my biggest thing but I do shoot them from time to time if they hang around.
Componon-S 50/2.8 (@ 5.6) on extensions on Olympus E-PL5 using on board flash redirected with paper (one hand on the camera, the other holding the paper). It's a bit of a gong show but the result speaks for itself. In this case, the specimen was low to the ground so my sony mini-tripod was a useful prop but focusing was done manually by moving the camera towards the subject. The flash is adequate to freeze any blurring movement.
This image is straight from the camera with no editing except for cropping and scaling down for the forum. The fly is 3-3.5 mm.
