Argentina field trip: green fly

Post by Martin G. »

Found this huge fly in a garbage can, it was laying eggs.

Was a bit difficult trying to take shots halfway facing down in the trash... considering the beauty of the fly, I did not mind the stench (the joys of macro!). The fact that it was laying eggs helped me take a few shots, but made it hard to get a decent series to stack as it kept rocking left and right to deposit the eggs.

Nevertheless, I am decently happy with the results.

First one is a stack of 3, but only some small portions of certain frames where used (happens often with handheld stacking). This one was with the Canon 100 mm L

This second one is a single frame only

last one is a stack of 4 frames taken with the MPE roughly between 2:1 ans 2.5:1

I done two stack in attempt to preserve the eye detail and the antennae

Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/200

Metering Mode Evaluative Metering
ISO Speed 800
Auto ISO Speed OFF
Lens MP-E65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo
Focal Length 65.0mm

I hope you like them, I was very excited by this find... so far it has been my holy grail of flies!

Your beautiful green fly is a Ornidia sp. (Syrphidae). It probably is Ornidia obesa, which is the most common and widespread species in this genus (of which four other similar-looking species are known).

My wife was just looking at this one.

Aside from the beautiful fly, I called her attention to the fact that it was shot by a fellow based in Montreal, shooting a fly in Argentina, that's identified by a fellow in California.

Is this a great site or what!

Never seen anything like. Fantastic colours and I must say, superb details. Very well done Martin and IMO, the most beautiful fly I've ever seen and I've seen thousands of fly shots :)

All the best and just in awe of this. I want one :)

Danny.
Worry about the image that comes out of the box, rather than the box itself.

Thank you all for the nice comments, I had a big smile on my face for the rest of the day when I found that fly!

Eric, thanks for the tentative ID, much appreciated.

Rik, indeed, these communities are so amazing. On this trip, I was with two friends, one from Switzerland and one from Argentina. My love for arachnids has given me the chance to meet so many people in different countries!

Will post some more pictures soon

Martin
