More Damselflies

Post by lauriek »

Another walk around the nearby pond and adjacent field led to more damselfly opportunities including at least one colour variant I'd not seen before...

Firstly I think this is the White legged damselfly (Platycnemis Pennipes) but I'm not 100% on the ID;

I think this is a female Blue-tailed damselfly (Ishnura elegans);

And this is the same species, another female but 'form violacea';
(unfortunately it looks like at least one wing has not unfurled properly, but she did seem to be able to fly)

And a bonus beetle (Oedemera nobilis, male);

All single frames shot with E3, ZD35/3.5 macro, STF-22 Twinflash.

Never seen a purple damsel before, excellent shot and good angle.
Favourite is probably the first shot though, excellent composition with those flowers in the background.

Nice pictures.
You've got the damselfly species right, but the third picture is a young male and not a female Ichnura elegans.

The second one you captured with its mouth open, that is something, besides damsels, that I have rarely seen or so it seems. A nice set of images there Laurie. Only on scant occasions do I see them around home. :)
