My favorite is the sow bug. A very nice take on a common but often overlooked subject.

Interestingly, I am looking for sow bugs now due to the fact an entomologist at the University of Alberta is doing a paper/field study on the critters for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Apparently one has never been done here. As I travel around Alberta a lot in summer I'll photograph and keep samples for her. Another researcher is doing slugs of Alberta. I ain't touching that one.

Sowbugs are actually quite sophisticated organisms. They are crustaceans, not insects or arachnids, and they even give parental care to their young!

Well done! I am particularly impressed with the sow bug, bc although they are as common as dirt, they just don't wanna sit still for me. But the textures are interesting, so I will try try again.

Agreed. When I get a day with absolutely nuthin' to do I'll see if I can find a few of the rascals and spend some quality photo time with them. They are quite interesting especially as they are the only land crustacean around here.
