Wasp And Food "Bubble"

Post by AlP »

I found this Western Yellowjacket (Vespula pensylvanica) eating atop a cinnamon roll left out on a picnic table at Dinosaur Provincial Park. It would take the sugary substance, eat it and then regurgitate a "spit ball". It did this several times before flying off. Canon 1Dx, ISO 100 at 1/250 and f14 with Canon 100mm macro lens. Two Canon 580 EX II's, left and right with 6"x8" softboxes with a dollar store foamie or a t-shirt for a background.

Wonderful framing and I like the low angle!

IMHO: You are losing a lot of detail due to poor light quality. I have never seen anyone successfully diffuse a ring flash, and when the light is not diffused well specular surfaces act like true mirrors and will return the color of the light source and not the color of the surface itself. In the specular areas you should see color and texture.
