I haven't tried the above trick, but it seems sensible enough that it would work. If I try it, I'll post some results here!

I suspect that the lenses which handle the lasers are corrected only for limited wavelengths.

Perhaps stacking phone camera lenses might give better results.

If you are questioning the term "stacking" it was used for meniscus lenses (aka, incorrectly, filters) and for teleconverters before digital photography was invented.

Alright, I unscrewed the lens from a webcam and reversed that over my cell phone and filled the screen with a 1mm subject. Yeah, OK actually it vignetted very badly but with the miracle of digital zoom...
