3rd party 0.5x six lens for Wild M450 Epizoom

Post by zzffnn »

What is a good 3rd party 0.5x aux lens for Wild M450 Epizoom, please?

I will likely take delivery of a Wild M450 Epizoom tomorrow and wonder how I should adapt it for lower magnification.

With 10x eyepieces, Wild M450 Epizoom goes from about 16x to 80x in total magnification (1.6x -8x from objective magnification and M450 Epizoom has a non-detachable 2x aux objective on the regular Wild Makrozoom objective [0.8x - 4x]).

I do use lower magnifications, so getting a 0.5x aux lens would be nice.

I see a regular Makrozoom on eBay for $500, but not sure it is worth the price.

I have a Chinese / Korean (Amscope / Omax) 0.5x aux lens, and wonder if it that would work, or would that introduce too much distortion?

I don’t know which 0.5x Wild aux lens will fit on M450 Epizoom and not sure if that can be easily purchased for reasonable price.

I do plan to take photos and maybe even do some focus stacking at 0.8x - 1.6x objective magnification, when I am lazy (and don’t want to put on my macro lens to do focus stacking). So I would like to have at least decent image quality from such a 0.5x aux lens.

Please kindly recommend me a solution. Thank you very much.

Image capture would be done by direct projection onto micro four thirds sensor, so I am not sure I can reduce magnification there. Also, I would like to visually view my subjects under 0.8x-1.6x objective magnification (or 8-16x total magnification). I do have decent 6x visual eyepieces, but would prefer not to use them on the M450; their view field is not as wide as I would prefer.

Thank you!

Let me answer my own question, after some careful testing: a Chinese no-name “0.5x WD165” aux lens works really well. Very minimal green CA in de-focused areas, none in in-focused areas.

Field flatness is very good. I tested on flat printed ink dots.

I am quite surprised by the no-name 0.5x aux lens. Icing on the cake is that screw threads match perfectly with M450 as well, once the 2x aux lens was (easily) removed.
