Nikon to Sony Monster Adapter (LA-FE1)

Post by bbobby »

I got many great Nikon (or for Nikon F mount) lenses and I bought last week this adapter. A bit expensive, but I am tired of waiting Nikon to make camera with more that 45MP and I think I read somewhere they source the sensors from Sony which means if they can get 80MP sensor Sony also will offer it.
Anyway, I tried some of the lenses on Sony A7R4. With Nikon AF-S lenses it works as advertised, AF works both single and continues mode, eye detection works, if the lens is with VR IBIS is deactivated and if it is without stabilization IBIS of Sony kicks in and works seamlessly. I tested most of the lenses I am using more or less often:

60/2.8 AF-S Micro G ED
105/2.8 AF-S Micro G ED VR
85/1.8 AF-S G
24-70/2.8 AF-S VR N
24-105/4 AF-S VR
80-400/4.5-5.6 AF-S VR G
200-400/4 AF-S G ED VR (1st version)
300/2.8 AF-S ED VRII

Also tried some legacy lenses and they also work great:
300/2.8 AF-S D IF-ED (1st version)
28-70/2.8 AF-S D IF-ED
80-200/2.8 AF-S D IF-ED

The only Nikon lens which did not work was 70-300/4.5-5.6 AF-S ED VR G, no idea why.

Lenses without motor like 200/4 Micro can be used in manual mode (IBIS of Sony works).

About the same with Tamron (albeit my impression is that they focused somewhat more slowly):

15-30/2.8 SP AF Di VC USD (G1)
24-70/2.8 SP AF Di VC (G1)
150-600/5-6.3 AF SP Di VC (G1)
70-200/2.8 AF SP Di VC (G2)
45mm F/1.8 SP Di VC

Sigma lenses were 1 of the reasons to get this adapter (their ART and Sport series lenses are wasted on 24MP sensors and usually are capable of outersolving the 45MP sensor too). In many cases I was buying Canon version because there was adapter for them. Anyway, good news is they do work OK with this adapter. I tested 50/1.4, 85/1.4 and 70-200/2.8 DG OS HSM S. The caveat is that none of the older EX DG OS HSM - including the MACRO ones - lenses works: 105/2.8, 150/2.8, 180/2.8, 120-300/2.8, 120-400/4.5-5.6, 50-500/4.5-6.3. Lets hope this can be fixed in future firmware.

I found also Tokina VCM-S 70-200mm f/4 ATX on one shelf - same issues like Sigma EX DG series, AF is constantly hunting.

There is a restriction at high FPS where it is reduced on none legacy lenses, but I think that’s only on the A1 and A9, and I think it reduces you to 10fps,

When I swapped to Sony I used the adapter with my Canon lenses, but I ended up selling them all and going with native lenses, some of the newer lenses designed for mirrorless are much smaller and lighter than their DSLR siblings for example the new sigma 85 f1.4 DNDG is a joy compared to the lead weight that was the ART for DSLR,
The R4 is a great camera, hoping to go for the R5 later this year
