Generic tube lenses

Post by Pau »

Browsing the Bay I found a seller offering new unmounted generic tube lenses in 180 and 200mm FL (cemented doublets)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/185557839606?_ ... 0667.m2042

Anyone has tested them (or is brave enough for doing it) ?

If they work well they would be useful for the community, for example I'm dreaming of converting one of my finite Zeiss scopes to infinite...

Looks intriguing, though I wonder if they're different than any other achromatic doublet. Still, nice convenient form factor and specs and the price is very good.
Of course it's fairly easy to swap the entire head on a finite scope with an adapter to go infinite, and that also usually allows wider field eyepieces to be used if desired.

Yeah, I have seen them being used.
Not as good as the Raynox but close, they are very cheap which is the benefit. The benefit diminishes as most of us have to source it through a secondary store, they are like $10 a piece on Taobao. At $31, unless I must have the exact magnification, I find it hard to not justify an extra $18 for a Raynox.
Solid and frankly a very good deal nonetheless.

There was a store selling unmounted 180mm triplets under the "ThermoFisher" name, these are the same as U-TLU, I cannot find the store anymore. $60 a piece I think.
Edit: found it: eBay item number:234299193545
Not a good deal, my memory was off.

Yeah, it is that one. I included it as an ebay item number reference.

It appears that I saw another achromat, not the one in the OP's ebay listing. This one is around $4-$5 each with a focal length of 200mm and fits perfectly in SM2 tubes (52mm O.D.).
I have ordered some to play with.

I've been looking for an achromat that would fit in SM1, and this might work. Maybe I'll give one a try.
