I promised to write a post on this and I advertised it as "addressing all my woes", kind of smug but I'm happy to say it worked.
Here's before, featuring my "improved stand":
And here's after, no more stand, more space, no need to deal with nylon screws and centring.
A Prior Z-axis focusing drive was used, these pop up on flea sites from time to time.
The adaptation is trivial, I simply figured out the pin-out of the non-standard custom weirdo motor, and made a crude cable.

I go through the disassembly process (not needed) and making the ugly looking connector. Part 2 will arrive when the parts I've ordered fly in. Going to make a proper adaptor.
Feel free to correct any errors, I'm sure I've made some regarding to the motor's polarity/direction, and my claim of "lowering controller output current should solve the squealing" is probably wrong... alright just asked someone, it's half wrong. The squealing could be due to excess or lack of current.

A common issue with these prior drives are broken ground cables and the cable coming loose, creeping out of the housing. These units can be had for very cheap and the repair only takes minutes. The motor installed is a double shaft type, although there's no access point for the second shaft. I suppose one can drill a hole into the housing and 3D-print a knob, I'm not going through that trouble.
