While looking for some other stuff, I stumbled across a new float lens from Linos for lower magnifications.
with optimisation from 0.06x to 0.52x probably not terribly exciting for people into macro and micro photography, since I haven't heard of it before and I thought I post the details I could find:

leaflet from asia with different curves (apparently it's called Blue mag floating over there):

price about 4500USD at digikeys (thanks to robert for the tip)

This one was released right at the beginning of 2020. The range is actually quite good for in-the-field natural history macro work like insects and flowers etc.
Quick specs:
Focal length: 120mm
Aperture: 5.6 – 16
Extreme magnification range of -0.06x – -0.52x
Floating element optics
Perfect match with 5µm pixel size
Working distance: 302mm – 2037mm
Spectral range: 400nm – 750nm
I plan to cover more on this lens when I finish the 105 float lens.
Rodenstock released a 138mm f6.5 HR Digaron SW FLOAT in 2019. This one lists for something like $14K but is supposed to have superb IQ.
Best,
Robert

FWIW: 105 vs 120 MTFs!

looking forward to that, looks like a very nice performer from looking at the data sheets.RobertOToole wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 10:08 amI plan to cover more on this lens when I finish the 105 float lens.
quite a long working distance with it's long focal length on low magnifications though.
interesting, just had a quick look at the data sheet looks quite spectacular from infinity to 0.2x:Rodenstock released a 138mm f6.5 HR Digaron SW FLOAT in 2019. This one lists for something like $14K but is supposed to have superb IQ.

nearly no CA and huge image circle (not quite enough for 4x5" film though).
price about 8200GBP + VAT, so 14K USD sounds about right.

Some vendor took an 138HR outside the shop on a phase one and shot a brick wall, no really a brick wall, and compared that with some other reference lenses and got some really stellar results. Shooting a brick wall with a $14K lens?

Found it, that Google thing works pretty good !
These guys say the 138HR float is the new standard for Phase one backs for them at least.

The wall!

wow beautiful picture
apart from the boredom factor, I found that brick walls are actually a poor choice for judging resolution, since everything has about the same scale. what works much better are old churches with lots of different ornaments in different scales.

Chris,
If you can possibly remind me in about a month when my work load eases up I will ask Qioptiq for a 120 Float loaner.
The 120 float would be better as a walking around lens with the wife type lens over the 105. But you do have a point with WD. It might be a little long. Most IF lenses FL drops normally so a Nikon 200mm is really something like 90mm at 1x.
About 5 years ago maybe I posted an image from one of my slide shows, comparing 50-105-125-150-200mm macro lens backgrounds, the difference was almost unbelievable. The 200 had best bokeh but the perspective of the subject was a little flat compressed compared to the others.
Best,
Robert
