Sometimes I would like to use a 20x objective at 15x, but the image circle is too small, so it is not usable for me.
I read somewhere (I can't remember where...) that a tube lens could improve the performance of the finite objective.
So i did test of combo, what if ...
I'm pleasantly surprised and I can write that in that case it seems to me that it works.
I used a Rodagon 150mm f5.6 as a tube lens and a Nikon M plan 20 0.40 ELWD 210/0 with a 10MP APSC sensor.
I compared it to Nikon without a tube lens.
Rodagon is focused almost on infinity - extension about 145mm, magnification about 14x.
Nikon M plan 20 0.40 ELWD 210/0 is extended to about 155mm, magnification is about 15x.
So the output is a bit bigger.
The performance seems quite similar to me, but Nikon itself shows more CA.
Photos of the corners show that Nikon is weak at 15x and also that Rodagon improves it a lot, even 14x.
100% crops, several stacked images from converted raw without editing.
Maybe it will help someone
