Leitz APO 8mm Apochromat 24X/0.65 Objective

Post by henryr »

I'm considering buying this lens but have no idea what 8mm means and it has no 160 or 170 marking. So, what Leitz tube length scope will this lens work with, and what does 8mm mean?

Thanks,
henryr

8mm is the focal length. They used to mark them by fl rather than mag waaaay back in the day. I'd guess one that old has to be 170mm.
Performance of one that old may not be amazing outside of the center.

Definitely a step up from a normal achromat! 37 mm parfocality though, so needs refocussing when mixed with modern 45 mm objectives. 170 vs 160 mm is not really an issue for objectives, but for the rest of the scope (particularly eyepieces). As scarodactyl says, it is no match for a more recent (plan) apo, but for a couple of tenners it is an enjoyable lens for a pondlifer.

Best wishes, René
