Nikon 2.5x M Plan vs. 40/2.8 Apo-Componon

Post by NikonUser »

Would be a useful lens for this magnification but.....
This small moth, L: 6.80 mm, is too large for my 4x objective which badly vignettes on the FF D810.
Unfortunately the 2.5x is even worse than the 4x; and with less than a flat field.
1398.2 Coleophora deauratella, full frame and cropped (moth too delicate to attempt to clean off the 'junk').

Eh, simply put, this is quite abysmal. Why not try the 2.5x-5x Laowa Ultra-Macro?

I cannot be certain, but many Nikon objectives correct CA and the flat field through the use of their (proprietary) tube lens and eye pieces.
Is this the finite objective that requires 210mm of tubing, or a newer one? There could be other issues with the objective such as decentering, while it shouldn't be that bad at just 2.5x... it could be.

Yes, a finite objective needing 210 mm tubing; NA 0.075; lens looks perfect. I reckon on a 'scope with a 10x eyepiece image will be good.
I have had this lens for a while, I now remember why I never use it.
I have a few enlarger lenses which give decent images at this mag., will reshoot the moth

They do not. Nikon has been fully internally corrected since the biophot in the mid 70s.

Low power objectives are difficult to design within their parfocal limits, and that doesn't help much with their image circle too. Used on a scope they'll perform as advertised.

You really should switch systems as this is a good territory for Canon MP-E65.

Admittedly it depends on the resolution you want and the size of the moth. I only aim for 3000 px wide pictures, so MP-E can handle this and somewhat smaller ones as well. With Stigmellas and such I'd need something else for optimum results. Mitu 5x might do the trick.

Mainly I'm just pointing out that we have similar interests. :D

Thought so, that's according to the tiny sample I've handled... I did read about it somewhere, I think the author might have been mistaken.

Thanks everyone.
Amazing that JKT can spread such small moths. Too late for me to switch to Canon, too much invested in Nikon equipment.
I did manage to clean up the moth, re-shot it with the Apo-Componon, same setup as before, different lens:

Sometimes I get lucky.

Was the APO-Componon with extension or stacked? If former, I'll have to try it.

The lens is a fixed f/2.8, reversed on a Nikon bellows
(I've tried spreading micros, impossible - need skill)

I'll have to try mine on extension then.

(Not impossible with enough magnification AS LONG AS they are fresh. Old ones - forget it.)

The Laowa 2.5x to 5x is really useful for this range of magnifications, especially at the lower end.
