New Puget System computer

Post by microcollector »

My desktop system died several years ago and was replaced by an ACER gaming laptop. It was an improvement over the old desktop for staking. Recently had a discussion with folks on a mineral FB group about stacking. One mentioned running stack with Helicon that finished in under 2 minutes.

Based on the info he provided, I purchased a new Puget Systems computer configured for Lightroom.
Gigabyte X&) AORUS Ultra motherboard
AMD Ryzen 9 3900 3.8GHz 12 core CPU
32 GB Crucial DDR4-2666 RAM
MSI GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Ventus GP OC 8GB open air graphics card
Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB SSD
Western Digital 4TB SATA3 HD

A stack run this morning consisting of 152 19.9GB CR2 images
LR to Helicon with TIFF conversion = 43 seconds
Stack pyramid = 20 seconds
Stack depth map = 15 seconds
In Helicon I have open CL selected

Many of the mineral folks I interact with on several FB mineral groups have switched to Helicon as they have found it to be faster. I have not tried this stack on Zerene yet.

Hello,

Very interesting!

I have a similar system but LR needs 4 minutes for the conversion of the 140 RAW files a 29MB from CR2 into TIFF (16bit)

What does “152 19.9GB CR2” mean?

BTW, do you develop the pictures in LR or only convert the files without any changes?

I only do minor work in LR before exporting. Spot removal is the main one and I have that setting saved so I can used it over and over. Will also do some exposure and highlight adjustment. As I use a Canon 70-200mm f4 L series lens as a tube lens I have the lens correction feature selected. I use PS for final adjustments after stacking.

I ran the same stack in Zerene
Pmax = 3 minutes 20 seconds
D map = 3 minutes 13 seconds. I accepted the default setting on the slider and continued stacking.

The enabling of open CL in helicon is making the difference. This was pointed out by Travis Olds and based on his experience. I get slightly faster times than he did as I have the next generation card. He is waiting for the next generation up from mine before upgrading.
