IKEA JANSJO lamps discontinued

Post by Alan Wood »

Bad news. I have just tried to provide a link to Ikea Jansjo lamps, and I can only find the USB-powered ones. It appears that they have stopped selling the mains-powered ones.

The replacement seems to be the NAVLINGE, which is less flexible and more expensive.

That sucks. Our national site has the USB- and clamp models listed, the one with stand has disappeared. I have two unused and two used from the same lot, luckily.

They discontinued them about a year ago, and have been selling-off the remaining stock ever since. The final version has a different plug (coaxial rather than two-prong) and those are the ones I got in my last purchase.

These make a good substitute - they are brighter that the Janso lamps too.

To be completely honest, the Janso lamps are just convenient, they aren't that great. I suggest getting one of those higher CRI "sunlight mimic" type LED panels or bulbs, and mounting it onto one of those magic arms. Make sure you get a somewhat good set of those arms, the cheap ones are nasty.

Well, the clamp of the Janso lights are really good. For my remaining units, I simply pulled the clamp off and used it to mount other items, they are strong and reliable!

If you need them, get them while you still can.

The ikea.se Swedish site still has the clamp-mounted Jansjö with external mains power supply and coaxial connector. The model with the weighted round base is gone also here.

Edit: I was about to add the following when a blackout happened:
The Jansjö page at ikea.se does have a warning that the product is scheduled to be removed from the catalog soon.

Same here in Spain, the USB and clamp models are still available, the one with a base/stand is not, apparently it has been already discontinued.

The new model looks more fancy and less practical for our purpose. But it is brighter than the classic model 220 vs 80lm. That's still low brightness though.

I use 3 of the "classic" ones, moddified to take standard GU10 bulbs, with 1100lm LEDs.

Do they make these, or are they just a stenciled Chinese product?

What do you mean by that? iKEA's own Swedwood factories certainly manufacture a lot of their wood-based furniture. The biggest one, located in Poland, had 16,000 employees some years ago. It's probably grown, if anything. And I believe that they make all the particle board in their own factory in Hultsfred, Sweden.

Of course I don't know how their lights and electronics etc are made. Maybe that's what you were referring to? They probably use subcontractors for a lot of that stuff.

Yes, I was too general. IKEA makes some of the furniture it sells, but not all. Far as I know everything else is outsourced. In particular, most of the LED products come from Shenzhen. They announced the discontinuation of the Jansjo right after the first tariffs on Chinese imports were announced.

I suppose from a volume perspective, a lot of what they sell is made by them since the furniture products are so bulky. From a SKU perspective, the vast majority is outsourced.
