Spherical aberration solved?

Post by Beatsy »

Interesting (new?) formula for calculating lens designs that are SA-free without using expensive aspheric elements. Sounds too good to be true.

Wasn't that just a formula to used in designing said Aspherical elements instead of numerical analysis? No price effect...

this appears to be just a translation of the following article from january:
https://transferencia.tec.mx/2019/02/21 ... -solucion/

and of course in todays culture of internet journalism, the story then gets reposted with some sentences switched around on other pages, like:
https://fstoppers.com/news/mexican-phys ... per-396628

the original paper is posted here in 2018:
https://www.osapublishing.org/ao/abstra ... 57-31-9341
or link to the pdf:
https://www.osapublishing.org/DirectPDF ... &mobile=no

I'd love to hear a lens designers view on this.

he also published two newer papers this year:
https://www.osapublishing.org/josaa/abs ... a-36-5-925
and
https://www.osapublishing.org/ao/abstra ... -58-4-1010

I'm not an optical designer, but my take is similar to JKT's.

More details at https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/ ... 557#251557 .
