Should the flashes be moved together with the camera?

Post by Adalbert »

Hello everybody,
I have completed the components for my new vertical setup.
I’m still thinking about the mounting of the motor (belt or shaft coupling) and of the flashes.

In this solution the camera is mounted to the rail and is moved during the stacking-session.
QUESTION: should the flashes be moved too ?

Hi;

If you move the flashes you will aslo change the exposure/lighting.

When the flashes are closer to the subject they illuminate the subject more.

You should keep the subject-illuminator (flash, LED light etc.) distance stable to have same exposure at all steps while stacking.
Regards.

Hi Omer,

Probably you're right.

If the subject doesn't move, then to keep the same subject lighting, the flashes shouldn't move. Camera + lens, do move.

What are we missing?

Bottom line keeping the flash to subject distance constant also means constant illumination which is what you want.
My extreme-macro.co.uk site, a learning site. Your comments and input there would be gratefully appreciated.

Hello Chris, hello Johan,
I was a little bit confused, because I have moved the object up to now :-)

It's not just about the light intensity (whose variations can be corrected in Zerene if they are small). The shapes of shadows and especially the reflections change as you move the lights. That could spell disaster for some subjects.

Hi Lou,
You are right.
I have mistaken my old setup (moved object) for my new setup (moved camera).

Move subject: flashes have to move with it.
Subject stationary: don’t move flash.

This applies to ring light add ons and the such, things that can be mounted on the lens.
