Leica screw mount focusing tube? Leica Helicoid?
To use a classic quote from 'Antz' - "I almost know exactly what I'm doing!"
The barrel is part of the lens designed for the Leica Visoflex system (converts the Leica rangefinder to an SLR), a lens front element would screw into the front of the focusing tube. My Leica 135mm f4 Tele-Elmar front barrel unscrews for use with the Visoflex system, so you get a lens system and an empty barrel just like shown. How it all actually works, is now clear to me, but what lens that particular barrel came from, I'm not sure, but it looks like a Hector lens (probably 135mm).
Ah! Here are some photos that show the Tele-Elmar, the front element and with it attached to the Visoflex system:

Craig,
Here is a Leica 135mm Elmar/ Hector type lens that looks like your item: see. I thought that a Visoflex was a type of reflex mirror setup, used to give a Leica Rangefinder an SLR-type ability. (Unfortunately, I've never been able to handle any of these Leica gems -- I only know of them from photos in books & internet, so I may be off-base here...)

Ray,
Thanks for the info and other details.
So it's a focusing helicoid with a permanent extension attached? Should also be handy for other purposes.
Could not resist the asking price.
