Spirogyra - Christmas spirit

Post by hkv »

I want to wish you all a great holiday and Christmas by sharing this photograph of Spirogyra. Sort of like a Christmas gift wrapping or tree ornaments.

Spirogyra has one of the most fascinating chloroplast shapes of all algae – a helical shape, or spiral. Spirogyras thrive in almost any freshwater environment and are a common species that is easy to find in shallow ponds, ditches and lakes. For this photograph I stained some of the Spirogyra strands with a number of fluorescent dyes to highlight the spirally shaped chloroplasts. They were then mixed with natural strands and placed next to each other on a glass slide and photographed in fluorescent light.

Technical information:
Sony A9
Olympus UPlanSAPO 20x
ISO 250
0.3 sec
Accessories: Microscope Olympus BX51, SAPO 20X objective, fluorescent illumination.
Post processing: Zerene Stacker, Lightroom and Photoshop. Cropped, haze removal, noise reduction, contrast enhancement.

Cool microcomposition!

What were your excitation/emission parameters?

Oh wow, you're really blasting them with short wave! Is that a standard set or something you cooked up yourself?

I made it myself out of eBay surplus filters.

Nice idea and rendering!
Spirogyras have a fair bit of variability. Tighter and more loosely wound, smoother and more convoluted ribbons like you have etc. Here all are single strands but even in the same location one can with some luck find double and triple strand types. Beautifully intertwined inside the tube - the separate strands rarely make a mess even with those bulges&folds in chlorophyl ribbon.
