Sony SLog Rheinberg filters Video

Post by imkap »

Hi, here is a test video with a sea creature, Rheinberg filters I printed a few days ago and a BHS with Dplan 4 and 1.4 condenser.

I filmed it with my newly acquired Sony A7s II using SLog3 profile. Wasn't really able to enhance the contrast with software without having the whole field look very artificial.

Anyone using this or similar camera? Do you have any info on those Picture profiles? I'm not sure whether to proceed with SLog, or there is a profile that might be better suited for microscopy... Obviously I'll experiment, but still some help would be really time saving...
Thanks

Disclaimer: no Sony A7s II experience, but I did color science applied research for a living.

SLog3 is a favored profile for detail with A7s II; sticking with that should yield many applicable hints if/when searching the InterWeb.

You did not mention specific software. DaVinci is IMO a good choice for color grading,
being free, powerful, popular and well supported, so again many InterWeb resources.

First trick: folks suggest slightly overexposing with SLog3, then lowering exposure in post to hide noise.

While I prefer text for actually learning software, which DaVinci provides:

...first checking out video to establish perspective can be helpful.

DaVinci Resolve is a mature program, with overwhelming features.
To help focus on color grading and reduce mouse movements,
consider e.g. Homemade Color Grading Console to add hotkey support for control slider selection:

Thanks, I use Premiere, DaVinci was crashing all the time on my PC a few years when I tried it, so I switched. Although I did like the program.
I did find some links about color grading and had some success with normal (non micro) videos. This one was just bad, maybe I should try another one in DF with SLog3 and see what happens.

DF with SLog3
Achieving overexposure with darkfield for best SLog3 seems a big ask.

Actually my BHS 100w halogen is quite powerful and the camera sensor is very sensitive, so I can overexpose all I want :D. Works well with 1.4 condenser. It records SLog3 in native ISO of 1600.
I just edited a DF video and had much more success than with these Rheinberg filters I printed. They are fun to use, but probably I'd need to experiment a bit more to find the right colors. I prented out 2 A4 sheets full of filters  With editing Rheinberg the problem is that the blue background changes with whatever you do with other colors (e.g green), unlike the black background which is black, just need to set the curve to have the right contrast so that black is black...

I watched one of the videos you sent and spotted Hue vs Curves which I never used. So used it now for the first time and I think it is great, you can get subtle (or less subtle) saturation changes in specific color specter which is great for popping out the colors from critters. Don't know why I never clicked on this, probably because it looked too advanced to me :)

Thanks for your help

Some inkjet inks are more transparent than others;
over a decade ago, I calibrated color printing on transparencies for projection,
but no idea which ones are good today; pigments are good on paper, but not so much on transparencies.
