A Pollen Project. Part 2. The Royal Sunset Hybrid Lilly
The subject of this second post is the Royal Sunset Lilly. Its pollen grains are very large when fresh. At approximately 140 micrometers in length, they are the largest that have seen to date. The flower is easily 3 inches in diameter and orange. Its anthers are packed with deep orange pollen, hence the deep color of the individual grain.
The pollen surface is covered with rounded shinny features causing reflections to appear on their curved edges. An attempt to reduce this with crossed polarizers created an image with such deep orange color that it was not pleasing photographically.
