Interesting to see the c.s. of a thallus, I often wondered sometimes what it would look like, especially the symbiont layer and for those that have them, the cilia were also a curiosity. I always assumed that the cilia were either a moisture gathering apparatus in regards to condensation or an anchoring device, or maybe even both. Back in the day, the symbiont layer was at one time proposed to be an example of controlled parasitism and was debated to a point I think and now these days it has been mostly ignored it seems and the notion of a symbiosis stands. I rarely see reference made to either anymore. Nice shots, lots of detail in those.
