common chicory floret cross section

Post by blepharopsis »

Pollen grains inside the anthers inside a chicory flower bud. Isolated florets were embedded in 7% agarose, sliced @ 200 um on a Leica Vibratome, stained with Congo Red and Calcofluor White, imaged on Zeiss LSM 880 at 10, 25 or 40x (objective magnification). I reconstructed a pollen grain in Blender based on a 3D mesh extracted from the confocal volume. Got slightly carried away when rendering.

Again excellent images in all senses.
(although I'm not so sure of liking the sci-fiction stile Blender pollen grains rendering)

Confocal microcopy is really amazing, though I assume this required very careful prep to get such great results. Really love these!

S'pose my microscope will become a telescope if I look through the wrong end?

Easy to see how one could get carried away with those wonderful images. Pollen to… spaceship?!
