Trichina (Trichinella spiralis here) is a nematoid that can encapsulate itself in a muscle. Once the meat is eaten the capsule dissolves in the stomach, the larva multiplies and burrows to the tissues of the new host. Trichinous meat can be major problem. Has e.g. wiped off a few polar expeditions - hastily prepared polar bear snacks. Trichinae have been found in other game as well as in domestic pig.
First two pics are straight BF and DF of a partially calcified cyst with the nematoid larva inside. To get a more balanced and perhaps informative view of the structures I then moved on experimenting combined DF&Pol. Pol alone makes muscle fibres dominate rendering the trichinella and its cyst almost invisible. Tried both separate DF and Pol stacks combined in post and hardware combination. Just a small amount of Pol is enough to complement the DF light the latter being so much weaker. Various mixtures of this in the next three images. The last one is just a silly offshoot, an impression.
An ancient slide by Felix Kunze. Needed a fair bit of cleaning (esp. for DF) but otherwise still reasonably good. 10x and 20x. Stacks of size 20-30, some double, DF & Pol, merged in post.
Anyway, enjoy your Christmas ham, well cooked!
