Hi,
here is a diatom arrangement I made a few weeks ago. Had to look through a lot of strew slides to find another one of the Trinacria spec. where I first found the mutated frustule in the centre and wanted to check whether it's a mutation or another species. As I found an identical one without the deformed "arm" (left side, third row) I think it is a mutation of the same species.
Regards,
Jan

Wow! excellent slide, admirable mounting skills
Nice find, although IMO with only one deformed specimen and without genetic sequencing you can't propose a mutation; the phenotipe also could be due to an accident or in general an environmental factor...As I found an identical one without the deformed "arm" (left side, third row) I think it is a mutation of the same species.

Your mounting skills are really up there, hard to believe this is hand mounted, without a micromanipulator!
Love those diatoms, you've found some pretty rare (undamaged) ones!
How did you clean the frustules? I'm still too scared to mess with nasty chemicals.
