Moss Organisms: Hypotrich, Unknown

Post by SW_Perspective »

I collected a small piece of moss after our abbreviated monsoon here in New Mexico in late September and have been keeping it alive under lights. I recovered quite a few protozoa from the runoff water which is very rich in bacteria. IDs are tentative and corrections are appreciated. I will try to post them one organism at a time. All images taken with a flash. Most are taken with phase contrast.

This hypotrich is 165 microns long. Frontal, Caudal and Marginal cirri are seen but not very distinctively. I didn't capture any ventral cirri. It has a rounded "tail" that looks to have a rounded edge and cephalad is broad. It suggested a whale to me. I haven't been able to ID it.

AZM is visible.

And the body is very flexible.

Here it shares the field with an amoeba. These were common in the moss and are about 60 microns in diameter.
