Moss Organisms: Hypotrich, Oxytrichid

Post by SW_Perspective »

I collected a small piece of moss after our abbreviated monsoon here in New Mexico in late September and have been keeping it alive under lights. I recovered quite a few protozoa from the runoff water which is very rich in bacteria. IDs are tentative and corrections are appreciated. I will try to post them one organism at a time. All images taken with a flash at 1/160 second while chasing the organisms across the slide.

This organism is about 145 microns long. AZM is obvious as is undulating membrane. Right and left marginal cirri are continuous caudally. Frontal and single buccal cirri are visible. Transverse cirri barely seen near caudal end.

This image shows Frontal and buccal cirri more clearly. (White dots left of undulating membrane.)

Lateral view. Body is not flexible.

This view shows the macro nuclei. There is slight distortion due to cover slip.

This organism is preparing to divide. The AZM and oral apparatus duplicate prior to division and is seen below the mid point.
