Wow these are stunning. Is that a diatom in the second photo, beautiful!

Yes. that is a diatom. I tried to dislodge it from the Micrasterias by tapping the cover glass with a needle, but it wouldn't budge. However, the diatom is a very good scale indicator, as will be seen in my post Desmids and Diatoms.
