Puente Formation Diatoms

Post by rnabholz »

These are fossil diatoms from the Puente formation in California. It can be tough to find undamaged diatoms from fossil material, there is one wreck and some chips out of some of these.

AO Series 4 Apostar, 90x Apo, Oblique mask, Canon 70D, stacked with Zerene Stacker. Cleaned up the background on all.

Diatoms

Post by Olympusman »

Nice stuff. Even with commercially processed Diatomaceous Earth, with a patient search you can find some intact specimens. When we vacationed in Greece last year, I brought home some seawater samples and found many diatoms I had seen in commercial Diatomaceous Earth.

Fun Fact - Years ago Diatomceous Earth was a prominent ingredient in toothpaste, until someone figured out how abrasive it was.

Sweet pictures!

Last one is not a Diatom, but a silicoflagellate, maybe Distephanus.

Best regards,
Michael

Thank you Mike.

I had heard about the toothpaste thing, I bet your teeth really shined.. For awhile anyway.

One other interesting, almost unbelievable Diatom fact is that it is estimated that diatoms produce somewhere between 20 to 25% of the Earth's oxygen. Crazy to think these tiny things do so much.

Thanks for the interest.

Michael,

You are absolutely correct, I took a bit of a shortcut, thanks for correcting me and for the ID.

Appreciate you commenting.
