Peritrichs

Post by Wim van Egmond »

It has been ages since I posted. I did not make that many micrographs because I worked on filming and time lapsing. But I am trying to archive a bit. This is a shot of Peritrichs attached to cyanobacteria.

I would like to find out if it is perhaps Pseudohaplocaulus infravacuolatus or Pseudovorticella monilata? Can anyone help me out?

best regards,

Wim

Gorgeous image!

The spasmoneme is sinusoidal, so it's Pseudovorticella (in Pseudohaplocaulus, the fibre would run parallel to the walls of the stalk, causing a zigzag, rather than "corkscrew", contraction). The substrate appears to be Anabaena, which is very typical of P. monilata (see http://www.jstor.org/stable/3225924?seq ... b_contents). That, and the very prominent "tubercles", make the species P. monilata most likely; but before identifying to species level, it would be useful to have measurements and see certain diagnostic features, such as the double contractile vacuole.

Thank you for your kind and useful comments! Bruce, you are a gem. I often work a bit in a hurry and I should have looked into the ID when I still had the sample. Not sure if any of the images I made shows a contractile vacuole. I can make the measurements from the image.

regards,

Wim

Very beautyful, with lovely detail and distribution of tones. Did you stack more images / did you use a flash?
Looking forward to see more of your work and curious about the timelapse clips!

Regards,

Walter
