Geranium robertianum (Herb Robert) "hair"

Post by Charles Krebs »

This plant is frequently described as "hairy", and I decided to look at single "hairs". I found them very simple and graceful. I was playing around with some lighting arrangements for the MM-11 setup so I photographed in three ways... darkfield, circular oblique, and brightfield.

Any idea what the red end does? (It looks almost like a sundew!)

So, your MM has acquired a DF condenser. Is it "just" the base of a random microscope, carefully aligned with the fixed axis? That's something I imagine for mine - currently a pile of pieces. Is there anything about the unusual setup which favors a particular base?

Interesting subject and perfectly photographed. These three small trichomes in the first image make it much more interesting and nicely supplement whole composition.

When I get back to the microscopes I'll take a shot of what I used for all three... but you will probably laugh, very low-tech!

Hi,

in reply to ChrisR,

Charles has imaged (brilliantly as usual) a type III trichome (hair) which has five cells in the stalk. The pigmented cell contains and secretes flavonoids.

See here:

Unfortunately, I do not have access to the full article.

regards to all and thank you to Charles for posting,
brian
