Well the days are getting noticeably longer (though not much warmer or sunnier ) so I thought I would sample a "new" pond. A quick look last night turned up a few nice subjects. Both images were with the 60/1.40 and are 126X on a Canon 50D sensor. DIC with electronic flash.
Not sure of the ID for the small (apparent) heliozoan in the second image... open to suggestions.
Dinobryon, Trachelomonas

Beautiful! It must be nice to have liquid water in your ponds.
The little sun is an Acanthocystid, I believe (most are far smaller than the familiar Acanthocystis turfacea).
An excellent article on Acanthocystis and its brethren, by a person well known to this forum: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ar ... 6588800691

Yes , indeed stunning!!!
Charles, your helizoan is Choanocystis aculeata, see http://www.arcella.nl/choanocystis-aculeata. The loose spine at 8 o'clock on your photomicrograph shows the thickened base of these typical spines. It is a very common species.
