I made a thing! or 12 :)
Desmids are the most Christmasy microorganisms - Staurastrum, Euastrum and Micrasterias all have "star" at the core of their name
I got myself a 3D printer and turned my meshes of desmids I extracted from confocal data into Christmas ornaments. A set of 12. Two color variants.
May 2022 be full of inspiration, joy and enthusiasm!

Re: I made a thing! or 12 :)
Thank you, Louise! The workflow is as follows:
1. I thresholded confocal stack and made it binary in Fiji/ImageJ. Opened it in 3DViewer plugin as surfaces, exported the mesh as an .stl file.
2. cleaned up the mesh in Blender - filled in all the holes, symmetrized if necessary. This step is pretty time-consuming!
3. since I wanted the desmids to be hollow, in Blender I cut the meshes in half, added some thickness and little joinery elements so the 3D-printed halves would snap together.
4. Printed on Formlabs Form 2 printer using Gray Pro resin.
5. Spray painted and added gold or chrome highlights using acrylic paint and chrome marker, respectively. Finished with a high-gloss clear coat.

Great! Thanks for the instructions - I might have a go myself one of these days Though might be difficult with my Ender 3 cos of the need for supports but might be able to find workarounds.blepharopsis wrote: ↑Sat Jan 08, 2022 8:27 amThank you, Louise! The workflow is as follows:
