just one from a recent mountain trip. this is a female i think, im not the best with bugs.

Well, it's certainly a very nice picture. :D

"Damselfly" is about as far as I can get, too. I can't even tell males from females unless they're paired up. Perhaps Erland or one of our other damselfly gurus will recognize the beast.

there was a ton of the blue ones and only a few tan colored ones like above. then oddly when i was leaving, along the mountain side was tons of females all away from the stream and not one male. thats where i took the first photo.

I like the angle you've got in the first picture, although it's not ideal from an ID perspective. I do think that it's A. vivida, and I think that if it were a male (young immature), the genitals would be visible under the 2nd abdominal segment. So probably a female.
I would assume this is taken in the western part of USA, where the species is very common.

thanks erland, i like the way the first one came out too. and yes western u.s in southern california. i found a website that has one almost identical and it says female.
