Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
Restacked missing part due to failed SD card using an 80GB CFA card. Horizontal step size (X axis) is 3mm, vertical (Y axis) step size is 2mm, so this means overlap is 16.67%. I am surprised that there is NO stitching problem at all even with small overlap like this. Last time I did this using Mitut...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
I thought it would be a piece of cake, but the SD card failed during 4,000+ shots that I left over night :( Well, it is 5+ years old and at least 500K shots on it. Salvaged some images from failed card, looking good, no stitching issues (Microsoft ICE) so far, should be able to make giga pixel if co...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
OK, better quality pattern arrived and it looks good, it has 0.2mm spacing. It is pretty hard to get perfect alignment, so I took the coordinates at L and R point to calculate perfect coordinates at A. Here are calculations (eyeballing all coordinates): L : 12, R : 6, assuming perfect straight line,...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
OK, got the 0.1mm grid pattern, but yeah, it is made of plastic and line are jagged, broken (red point A). Even that, the worst part I can see is the point B, where the (vertical) gap is widest, its Y axis coordinates are 6307 and 6326, so the gap is 19 pixels. So, assuming the line is not bent due ...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
Oh wow, thanks JKT! I think that table should be saved somewhere here for future reference!!! I have been in "user mode" with Raynox DCR-150, never had 2nd thought about the claimed 4.8 dioptor/208.33mm focal length, till testing Aurogon using it as part of reference. Focal length of 211.43mm (I tak...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
Though I have a hunch that empty magnification is happening, at NA = 0.5, it still feels (subjective) 50x is better :D It has less edgy feel even with a tad sharpening (minimum with Paint.Net). So this was done at 50x 0.5NA "Straight" out of Zerene Stacker 50x05_1.jpg "Processed" -- saturation and c...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
Some variables you didn't mention: Barrell distortion combined with the the length of used measurement line & stacking order. I have some numbers for a few lenses on another computer - I'll post them likely tomorrow. Those are based on a largish number of pairwise measurements and the focal lengths...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
While shooting video with 50x, since it is on the camera, I did the same for 50x. Here are the numbers: left (1536, 4249), right (8079, 4242), so total length is 6543.00 pixels long, meaning it is 6543 / 9504 * 35.9 = 24.715mm long. The distance between two red arrows is half of 1mm or 0.5mm, this m...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
You can expect this sort of variation from some microscope objectives too. It only really matters if you're doing critical measurements. Still, an impressive showing from Laowa. OK, understood that slight variation is fine, particularly without precise equipment, 1% to 2% are acceptable. But what p...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
Further cross examinate it, I used a clone of one of Olympus 10x achromat, it needs 180mm tube for 10x. Under Raynox, "theoretical/nominal" magnification should be 10 * 208.33 / 180 = 11.574x. Here are numbers: left point (3184, 2606), right point (6281, 2603), so total length is 3097.00145 pixels, ...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
Here is one I found on my card, shot with Aurogon at 10x. Points are measured on the right side of markings. So here are the numbers left (1517, 2401), right (8250, 2401), yeah, I used the bottom horizontal line to align the image with screen grid line, so it is pretty much horizontal. So total leng...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
I was hoping to use the part pointed by red arrow to do some resolution check/tests because of known angles, but obviously, even using my 50mm macro lens on FX30 and about 25cm away, also hand held, that part can be resolved, let alone a 10x or higher optics. So that idea is off. The gradient you se...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
So, it is really tough to estimate magnification based on small images posted here by measuring their length, there is rotation, focusing, scaling (with different algorithm), etc. To accurately measure magnification, we need a known, precise pattern like the calibration slide I used. This is why I d...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
Here is a 20x test, calculating it makes magnifcation for Aurogon at 20x to be 20.22x, that is about 1.1% off claimed, given all the tools used, eyeballing the two points, I think this is acceptable. left point (2166, 3019), right point(7518, 2992), makes it 5352.068 pixels in length, or 20.217mm lo...

Re: [Hands On] Venus Optics (a.k.a Laowa) Aurogon Macro Lens
My calibration slides are here, one of them is similar to C1 calibration slide, so here are conclusions about 10x magnification. Short answer is, Aurogon 10x is 9.99496x, given all the tools used, I think it can be considered as 10x. This calibration slide has a pattern with 101 markings at 0.01 per...
