Please study Chris S's comment above!! It looks like you may not have read or understood it. It was important.

Re: New Rayfact Lenses at Japan Trade shown in 2023

The specs are actually disappointing: it looks like it is only corrected for green light! In that case cheap second-hand stepper lenses come quite close to those specs.

Re: ultra macro suggestions beyond 10x -- cheaper but ok objectives to play with? Sony aps-c

One unusual option for long working distance with high NA is to work underwater. I have a 40x 0.80 water dipping Nikon objective that has a working distance of 2mm. That's very high for such a big NA. These are expensive though. I just mention it in case someone is wrestling with the compromise betw...

Re: Help! Macro rail minimum 1µm step size is too big.

With my Piezoelectric focuser flexure mechanism along with a Raspberry Pi 3B+ I was getting 73nm per step over a range of 300um. I probably missed it, but is there a description of that setup somewhere? The method does not have the elegance of piezoelectric flexure, but tiny steps (and over large d...

Re: some scales

For short-lived subjects like fragile flowers, flash is very helpful, to avoid the continuous light source over-heating the subjects and causing them to wilt during a long stack.

Re: Mitutoyo M Plan APO 5x or 10x?

thank you all, in the end I purchased the 10x, I hope to obtain even at lower magnifications, like 5x, superior results to my Laowa 2.5-5x Good choice, it will open up new horizons for you. But it will not give you better results across the whole frame at 5x on a FF sensor, for the reasons we expla...

Re: Mamiya 140mm macro lens

I was an early adapter of pixel-shifting, and I often use it. It's not true that Panasonic is the only one that provides in-camera high res shots. My Olympus (8-shot shifting) and Pentax (4-shot shifting) also do this. I think Sony is the unusual one for not doing it that way. It takes a lot more ti...

A lens designed for mirrorless cameras might need major redesign to provide a good image on cameras with longer flange distances.

Re: AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2x-5x full-frame macro lens

That looks interesting. It has many more special-glass elements (4) than the Laowa has (1). Also, being designed for mirrorless cameras, it has fewer artificial design constraints than the Laowa has. But according to the first reports it's not as good which says a lot about marketing and the use of...

Re: Methods to evaluate performance of a focus rail

Very interesting. It's nice to see a microscope focusing block compared to the rails. In my experience these blocks are better in almost every way than the usual rails, and can be very finely controlled at very small step sizes using a WeMacro MicroMate. Also it is worth noting that some rails have ...

Re: Mitutoyo M Plan APO 5x or 10x?

thanks again, every contribution is precious. but does anyone have both the Laowa 2.5 5x and the Mitutoyo 5x or 10x? Yes, I have all three, and my recommendation is based on quite a lot of use of all of them. A much more interesting question would be whether to get the Mitutoyo 7.5x instead of the ...

Re: Mitutoyo M Plan APO 5x or 10x?

Since you have the Laowa 2.5x-5x and a FF camera, the choice is very clear; you should get the 10x. The Laowa is really good on FF.

Nice! I may have resolved Sunset Moth yellow interference structures here: https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=41494&hilit=sunset This is easier than green or blue interference structures since yellow has a longer wavelength. But as others have pointed out, the Papilio scales...

Re: Optics Roadtrip 2024

Sounds exciting Robert! Good luck. Your last road trip that I can remember was your Scitex pick-up...it caused me to search for one myself! I ended up getting three from the seller I found (he wanted to get rid of all of them, for less than the price of a single lens). I made a deal with him: I conv...
