Thanks for the nice comments. I found another bit of these today and watched the oil droplets come out in dark field--very nice slide show. I probably should have taken time lapse, but that will have to be another time. Another thing I noticed is all the cercomonas in the surface slime--very thick w...

Kemp 100 form

I recently obtained a 100 form diatom slide from Klaus Kemp. Have to say it is perhaps the most beautiful slide I have ever seen. I did a quick darkfield stitch from 12 images (10x NPL Fluotar, Diavert, Heine condenser). They lose some of their individual splendor at such a low power, but I think it...

trouble with ID

I found of a bunch of these flagellates today, and almost all of them had these bubble-like extensions/attachments. I have searched and I can't find flagellates with bubbles. The main bodies are about 8um long. A few did not have the bubbles and cruised at high speeds, while the ones with "bubbles" ...

Botryococcus Braunii

Took a sample of some surface scum on the water today. It was filled with these algae colonies belching out droplets. Turns out the scum looks oily because these algae are 30-40% hydrocarbon oil by dry weight! The bodies are about 8um long. This colony is about 400um in diameter, and it's a dense pa...
