Re: Zeiss GF Planachromat / GF Planapochromat
The working distance is less than 1mm iirc. I have not tried one but it is probably quite solid, they're supposed to be comparable to contemporary Nikon mplans.

Re: Lasertec 5x 0.25 HR Objective on eBay
Let's say the message went something like
"I checked sales record.
I couldn't find the record we sold our microscope to your company.
How did you get it?"

Re: Lasertec 5x 0.25 HR Objective on eBay
Well, I tried contacting Lasertec to ask what the list price was. They said they only sell objectives to businesses that have already bought a full microscope system. Nothing surprising about that but nice of them to get back to me. So that's one catch.

Re: AI Photo Use So Widespread is Sad to See
But of course they have. AI has been around for a very long time. It only became useful for use in CGI in the mid to late 90's, but by 1997 the majority of Hollywood productions were using CGI with AI tools for making movies. Stills are a simple matter vs a full-blown CGI movie. The images we're di...

Re: How to calculate the magnification of 2 inverted lenses for different systems?
The crop factor doesn't affect optical magnification at all and should not be used in this calculation. Just use the focal lengths to calculate magnification. Then when you know that you can look at your sensor size and figure out what your final field of view will be (which is different from optica...

Re: Lasertec 5x 0.25 HR Objective on eBay
I was just given some old histology slides (mouse or rat brain I believe) and decided to give them a try. These should be great for sussing out comparative resolution, less so for chromatic abberations. Shot on my trusty Nikon microscope with a cheap LED illuminator for backlighting, no condenser. A...

Re: Lasertec 5x 0.25 HR Objective on eBay
I still need to do a more visually appealing shootout but I had a pleasant surprise. I needed to add a spacer since the 45mm parfocal length is inconvenient when put on a nosepiece with 95mm parfocal objectives, and not only does the added space not add any vignetting (it has with other infinity obj...

Re: MEJIRO GENOSSEN FL0530 4.0/110 FLOAT LENS TEST IS FINALLY ONLINE
That's an optical inevitability because of the higher RI of the polarizer glass. I believe you can measure the RI of a material by the ratio between measured thickness and the distance to focus the front face down to the back face on a microscope.

To be fair Robert's test was already pretty compelling--I've been craving one since even though as I repeat to myself I have no need for it. But now I'm having to repeat it more.

Re: MEJIRO GENOSSEN FL0530 4.0/110 FLOAT LENS TEST IS FINALLY ONLINE
I gotta keep telling myself I'm shooting aps-c, I don't need to think about the mejiro float lens, my z6 is plenty good, it has floating elements too, I don't need one....I was sure looking at that last lot on eBay though.

Re: Lasertec 5x 0.25 HR Objective on eBay
The lasertec objective has m27 threads and my microscope nosepiece has m32 threads. I am using a 3d printed adapter and the m32 threads were a bit too big so it isn't threaded on all the way and it's not quite parcentric. When I have that fixed I'll probably do one more set of tests, but for now her...

Full post with proper testing to follow but I wanted to do a quick one to get a broad idea. Dusty chip with one directional oblique lighting diffused with wax paper, aps-c on a canon t7 24mp. One comment on the picture is that it would probably benefit from some sharpening.

Re: Macroscopes - some musings
Your photos are really nice! This is all a matter of degrees at the end of the day--we all have to figure out what compromises we need to make on usability and comfort vs theoretical image quality. Not to mention that geeking out over gear and optimizing systems is its own reward. They have made sev...
