Hi John,

Nice images - certainly if this is your first attempt with insects!!
But.....dont show these to your wife. Her relationship with spiders would not benefit....

Hi Kurt,

You use the micro-nikkor 105mm at higher magnifications than the 55mm?
And at these magnifications, is it better than the 100mm luminar?

Barry

Hello Kurt,

A while ago I found your website. Your images are very nice, often with superb compositions.
And your descriptions of your technique are very useful! Thanks for that.

I noticed you use the micro-nikkor 105mm up to 5:1 ??

Barry

Wow, beautiful colours and composition!
How large is this?

I think I see some halo's which can be easily removed.

John, Again astonishing output - your images are of extreme quality. So clean. How long do you spend post-processing (not the stereograms but only making adjustments etc) an image if I may ask? And ofcourse, very interesting morphology of these mouthparts. What a complex mechanism at this scale....n...

Thanks Rik, I'll study those drawings.
Does the fine focus knob rotate as you turn the coarse focus knob, and vice versa?

Rik,

Most focus blocks are driven by a coaxial system, either gear or spring loaded friction balls. Last option may be very compact, but may slip.
Any chance to mail me a scan of that image of your manual?

The parts in the focus block are spring-loaded, but even then it is a chalenge to have no backlash - again, counted on the micron-level. Both the geared knob and the slide itself must be spring loaded, and parts must be very accurately machined. Thus, these blocks are neat devices.

Funny isn't it; when you get results which are too equal to the theory, you are starting to get doubts..... As a mechanical engineer I know that is nearly impossible to have a lineair system without any backlash at this scale, so I am surprised about the focus block. Why not do the test again while ...

Nice wasp portrait. Very clean!
The hairs look as a little bit oversharpened in some area's, maybe this is an effect of the Raynox on the 28mm?
