Circular polarizers
I have been aware of the quarter wave filter in circular polarizers for some time.
So, Rik, what you are saying is that the cross-polarization effect is dictated by which side of the filter you are presenting to the other polarizer in the cross-polarization setup. Correct?

With that much damage on the front element, I would give it up. There will always be lens flare and lack of contrast that would negatively effect image quality.
