Pop goes the weasel!
The bug eggs hatched last night while I was asleep. I had been fretting about having my rig tied up making a time lapse of the eggs and not getting any good use of the 4th of July holiday to stack some other subjects. The baby stink bugs have kindly hatched and thus I can concentrate on the Great Bl...

In just 12 hours the critters have changed noticeably. A dark patch is starting to develop. I have adjusted the iris behind the 10X lens to give a bit more depth of field. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/1597_Embryo_Progress_1.jpg I now have the end of one egg in OK focus and have star...

Bug eggs
My wife was on the war path with some asparagus beetles that have infested our small asparagus patch. While "collecting" some beetles she discovered an egg mass (stink bug eggs?). She snipped it for me to photograph. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/1597_Slide2_4.jpg http://www.photomac...

Good Tip!
I tired the Photo Stereo Maker software suggested by ChrisR. Here is the result on the lower pair... The result is easier to view perhaps? Thanks for the tip! http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/1597_Tiger_Beetles_2.jpg In regards to making the photos, I have a hinge joint in the arm that ...

Odd stereo pair
The juxtaposition of the textured eye surface and smooth head surface produces a strange stereo effect.

Argon gas?
I have worked with Argon (also invisible and odor free) and a 30 minute exposure would knock out a grass hopper for ~ 10-20 minutes, then it would revive. While unconscious, the bug did not look natural, it curled up just like a dead one. After a while it twitched a bit then was as good as new. This...

Curious knees and eye specks
Sadly, the knees were never in focus in the stack. Rik's theory about the reason for left and right variation is probably correct. The shots were processed on two different computers, both with Combine ZM Soft stack. One however used modified settings, one the defaults. That may play a bit also. Sti...

Got my new Iris last week
I purchased the iris mentioned above and installed it in my rig. I am very pleased. I use M42 extension tubes to support my microscope lenses and it installed with no difficulties.
Thanks for bringing the iris to my attention!

BugEZ progress
I have been quite busy working on my apparatus. After I installed by belt driven actuator with multiple stages of reduction I had a very slow moving actuator. I tuned up the electronic controller to drive the "steps" more quickly. This has reduced the time needed to set the start and stop travel sto...

Floppy spiders
This is a very nice image. The abdomen of most spiders is relatively soft and does not provide much stiffness to support the cephalothorax. If I glue a spider to a toothpick via the abdomen the cephalothorax usually flops about like a limp rag doll. I recommend attaching to the cephalothorax if you ...

Upgrade to BugEX home rig
I took advantage of the Memorial Day holiday to make some updates to my rig. This included a lighting change as well as a long contemplated upgrade to my bug actuator. My previous equipment is described here: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12851 Here is the "upgrade" story: ht...
