A LED ringlight, with an acrylic block with conical hole for diffusion comes to my mind.... would this tackle the "hot" top side?

flash vs continuous light

Numerous discussions on this forum about this subject, but I just could not find what I was looking for. One reason to favour flash light above continuous light could be vibration issues, eliminate mirror but also shutter shake. My reason to favour continuous light (fibre optic, or daylight bulbs) u...

Andrew,

It would be interesting to test the parabolic vs a cylindrical cutout.
Perhaps the parabola theory works fine, but light may be bounced better in the cylindrical shape.

Andrew,

Indeed, little difference between flat and parabola top part.

Is the direction of the flash light not important for the way light is reflected by the parabola? They are now off-centre.
Those in Graham's post were also off-centre, but this was with a cylindrical reflector.

Hi Tomas, Wonderful images! And fancy setup. LEGO is in all our hearts....:-) I have two questions: 1. I understand that the Proxon provides the lineair slide. But how do you prevent the screw having backlash....is it by having the two nuts away from eachother? 2. How do you get that nice background...

Beautiful photographs!
The eye at 2x is very nice. Perhaps you could clean the eye alone with alcohol for further shots.

Ah, thats the trick...
So if I understand correctly, the right flash of the twinlight illuminates the left side of the subject?
The light is more directional than firing through a styrofoam cup, but still not too harsh. It gives a good touch of depth in the image.

Weird spider

Someone gave me this spider - no idea on family or whatsoever. It's from Java. Interesting morphology. 1,5x enlargement on sensor of Canon 50D, live view and capture by PC, white balance by grey card, 12 RAW converted to TIFF then processed in Helicon Focus, lens was macro-nikkor 12cm/6.3 at one sto...

For 2x and 3x (and if price is not of prime importance), the Luminar 63mm and the S-Planar 74/4 are very sharp and contrasty. With good working distance.

Wonderful series! And interesting info. How would this occurence of moths in dung be named, biologically? It is not symbiosis, nor inquilinism... We've been in Australia twice....love the country. For my taste the pictures would be even better if the labels underneath them would be removed/covered. ...

Hi Dough,

Can imagine the issue about the LED's.
With minerals, I guess colour temperature is very important? How do you control it, and is there difference in the LED / fibre optic workflow?
