Re: Skimmia Flower bud

Nicely done! I know how you feel. I've been scrounging in the basement for house spiders, and winter has barely started!

Re: deformed spider?

I was thinking an injury, resulting in loss of hydraulic pressure, but dehydration seems very reasonable. I can't make out the ID, other than either a running crab spider, or perhaps a huntsman.

Re: Our smallest dragonfly

Very nice "contextual" image! Does "recently emerged" account for the slightly crinkled appearance of the wings - as in, not yet fully "inflated"? Or do mature adult wings appear that way too? Makes a nice church window effect, whatever it is. Lovely. Even when far enough along that they can fly, r...

The back story is that there is this wetland (more-or-less-a fen) near me, and it has a very healthy popula...

Re: Pilgrim's Progress--Joro Spider update

Very interesting! I don't know what these spiders will do w regards to our native garden spiders (Argiope). But those have steeply declined pretty much everywhere long before the Joro spider had arrived.

Very cool. I remember maybe a year ago we had a discussion about Easter eggs found on microchips.

For grasshoppers: is it only a pattern or a physical feature... something like the joints between the plates of the skeleton?
The markings mark where the cuticle is folded inward. This would be for both structural reinforcement, and to provide surface area where muscles attach.
