flynet, What editing software do you have? What Rik is suggesting is as follows: 1) Take photo of left side 2) Take a completely separate photo of right side that overlaps previous image a bit, so that some of the same structures are visible in both photos 3) Bring both photos into something like ph...

Chris, Indeed it seems that few zooms are suitable tube lenses. After using them, I strongly recommend the Raynox DCR-150 and DCR-250. Rik convinced me to give them a go, and I have no regrets. Even with the large compliment of necessary adapters, they are inexpensive and deliver high quality image....

Yeah, I've got my own scrap yard going on, too, in a way... I often help friends and family out with their computers, but sometimes they are beyond sensible repair, like the last laptop with a completely dead motherboard. In those cases they usually just want their files off the HD, and to be rid of...

Do you mean that the working distance is too short? Generally, the higher magnification the objective, the shorter the working distance, and objectives rated as LWD or ELWD in the same series often have lower N.A., so there seems to be a tradeoff there. 40x is difficult to work with without a tradit...

Nicely done, I see lots of folks doing this now. Giving Stackshot some mild heart palpitations, perhaps ;) I made a controller a few years back, have been continually revising it. For what it's worth, I found motor controller boards to be more hassle than they were worth. I ended up using a plain ol...

Great image... a wonderful source of inspiration for me, as I normally limit myself to biological things... but I have so many electronics around that I should be exploring as well! This might seem crazy, but I have used a black sharpie (it's removable with ethanol anyway) to dull the shiny aluminum...

A note on Manfrotto Nano clamps
Hi everyone, Earlier this year I had a bit of a surprise when I received what looked like knock-off Manfrotto nano clamps from an online order. They were a different shape than expected, the handle was made out of plastic instead of aluminum, and the branding/silk screening was of poor quality. Howe...

Any experience with the Nikon CFI BE Plan 20/0.40?
Rik has in the past raved about the quality of both the Nikon CFI BE Plan 4x and 10x from the same set , with photo proof of the quality of this glass. I have been using the 10x and am having a great time with it, so the 4x is now on my shopping list. They do seem to have some issues with aberration...

Hi Keith,
Here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3y3IZ1ZMIA
It's not a particularly good video but hopefully it does the job!

abpho, Thanks for the comments! A fairly saturated background is really the look I'm going for, for this set of images. That said I had to really tone down the green by desaturating it quite a bit... it was a very saturated gel. I have rather little room to work with between the post that supports m...

themagicdrainpipe: thanks! canonian: Nope, not dimmable, although you can achieve much the same effect by tilting them relative to the subject, moving them back a bit, or just shoving ND gels on them! I have not tried polarized gels... are you suggesting using cross-polarization as a sort of "dimmer...

Rainbow series - green - grasshopper tibia
I have decided to create a series of high magnification photographs of various insect body parts shot against colored backdrops. The plan is to cover a rainbow of colors for the backdrops (or perhaps more accurately, a color wheel) - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple This is the image for...

TheLostVertex, I just made it user-configurable, rather than hard-coding numbers into the software. The UI lets you set the number of steps it turns before it reverses, and the RPM at which it turns. All three of my motors max out at somewhere around 200 RPM before they start stalling, which is pret...
